Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission Awareness - Education - Inspiration

2020 Dr. Anna Steinberger Outstanding Educator Award of $1,000

The application period for the Fourth Annual Steinberger Award is now open!  The winner will be announced in May 2020.


The Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (THGC) is firmly committed to supporting efforts to teach the next generation about the Holocaust and/or genocides in the Ottoman Empire (Armenians), Cambodia, Rwanda, the Balkans, Sudan (Darfur), and the Middle East (Iraq and Syria).

In 2020, the THGC will present a monetary award of $1,000 to one educator who demonstrates a record of excellence in engaging any of the aforementioned subjects with Texas students (grades 6-12). Librarians, curriculum specialists, and classroom teachers in any discipline are eligible to apply.

The deadline for submission will be 4:00 PM CST Thursday, February 27, 2020; the award winner will be notified before the end of May.

Dr. Steinberger is a Holocaust survivor and served as a founding member of the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission. She retired from the University of Texas Medical School in 2001, but has continued to demonstrate a commitment to education in Texas.

Requirements

The applicant must...

...hold at least a bachelor's degree.
...be employed full-time as a teacher, curriculum specialist, or librarian at a public, charter, or private school in the state of Texas.
...have at least three (3) years of experience working with students.
...have a record of teaching or actively supporting the teaching of the Holocaust and/or genocides in the Ottoman Empire (Armenians), Cambodia, Rwanda, the Balkans, Sudan (Darfur), and the Middle East (Iraq and Syria) to students in grades 6-12.

The applicant must...

...include a complete application.
...include a PDF version of a current résumé or curriculum vitae of no more than three (3) typed pages.
...include a PDF version of a letter of support from a Texan, preferably an immediate supervisor, colleague, student, or student's parent. The letter should be no more than one (1) typed page, and should present the writer's perspective on why the applicant deserves the award.
...e-mail all three PDF files as attachments to Christian Acevedo at christian.acevedo@thgc.texas.gov with "2020 Steinberger Application" in the subject line.
...ensure all application materials are received in their entirety by 4:00 PM CST on Thursday, February 27, 2020. No late applications will be accepted.
