In this lecture, Chad Gibbs (PhD Candidate in History at University of Wisconsin-Madison) discusses his research on the famous uprising staged by inmates of the Treblinka II extermination camp in late summer of 1943. He focuses on how studying the locations of "spaces of resistance" created by Jewish prisoners provides revelations about the roles of women prisoners in the resistance. He examines how his findings regarding women’s actions have prompted him to consider archival silences, masculinity, and the gender dynamics of Holocaust survivor memory and storytelling more broadly. He reflects on how survivor testimonies from the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive have contributed to his research.
